![]() This was the single most perfect way I could have possibly spent these few days. Whether your trip is for some family time, a romantic getaway, or a time to get some peace and quiet for yourself, the Inn at Meander Plantation will not disappoint! Dinner was definitely worth it - save up if you have to! Hospitality is top-notch. For dinner, you have your choice of a 3-course dinner ($50 per person) or a 7-course tasters menu ($75) and optional wine pairings ($20 and $35 respectively). ![]() It amazed my mother and me that the presentation, service, and quality of food was so impeccable and that such effort was invested considering their relatively small clientele (approximately 12 people at breakfast Sunday morning and 6 people at dinner Monday night). We had a 3-course breakfast at 9 AM including homemade cranberry-orange muffins, a fruit parfait with fresh strawberries and bananas, and then your choice of either baked eggs with guryere or cinnamon oatmeal pancakes. ![]() We spoke with Suzanne (one of the owners), a very charming lady with an adorable golden retriever puppy (puppy is not kept in the house). One goes by the river and into a large cornfield (I had never been in a corn field before!) The trail heads are kind of hard to find, so you may have to ask the owners. If you like walking/hiking, definitely check out the trails that the gardener has created. sloped floors, etc.) but once you get used to the idea, it has a lot of charm. The house was built in 1766, so things are obviously old (i.e. We felt comfortable leaving our door unlocked, and the staff even kept an eye on our laptop in the main living room while we went for a stroll outside. The sitting area and bathroom were not locked from the rest of the house, but it was extremely private. We also had a little sitting area with a library including a collection of books and a few games, and a private bathroom. Upon arrival, we were shown to our suite (the Jefferson Suite) which is a very large bedroom with two queen beds (perfect for mother-daughter), two wing chairs, a desk, a table, and a large dresser. We wanted a mother-daughter getaway during the week between Christmas and New Years and chose to spend two nights at the Inn at Meander Plantation. We do eat tapas regularly (not cheap in the DC area), and I know we can usually split 6-8 dishes for $50. The breakfasts were excellent, and included in the price of the stay. Certainly not the quality or quantity I expect for that kind of money. The food was good, but nothing that really made us say "WOW". For my $50 (plus tax and tip), I got two silver-dollar sized lamb chops, two small pieces of fish, and a nice piece of chocolate cake. We each got to choose 2 of 4 first courses, each about the size of a tapas dish, and dessert. For that money, we didn't even get an entree (steak that night). We're not real fancy people, so spending $50 per person on dinner was unusual for us. But it was the (mandatory) Sunday night dinner that was really a letdown. Highly recommend side trips to Fredericksburg and Charlottesville. The views and grounds and the entire surrounding area were great. So our showers were cool with very little water pressure, since we couldn't turn the hot water very high. The shower was bad turning the hot water up over 1/4 turn made it sound like a machine-gun, too noisy to bear. The room/house (Summer Kitchen) was nice, decorated perfectly (with a Christmas tree!), comfy bed, and a great fireplace. My girlfriend and I just spent two nights here at the end of Dec 2008. A weekend at Meander is just a treat to drop off the edge of the "real world" and hike, explore wineries, read, and relax. Breakfast is also very good, very filling, you won't really need much for lunch after that! For example, we had truffled eggs with sausage, in addition to a delicious pumpkin pie muffin and bananas and strawberries topped with Romanof sauce. The food is fresh, local, and thoughtful. The innkeepers, Suzi and Suzanne, are always nice, and then there is the food.you have to have dinner at the restaurant at least once, and I highly recommend the Virginia wine flight to go with each course. The fireplace is just lovely, it is so wonderful to be able to sit in front of that fire! The beds are really comfortable, and there is a full bath. The best things about the Dependencies are that there is a fireplace and the prices are most reasonable. We stayed in Dependency #2, which is off the main house. ![]() This was our 3rd trip to Meander, and as always it was a treat.
